Audi Hungaria: aluminum in the loop

Győr, July 26 2024 – Audi Hungaria’s Aluminum Closed Loop project was launched in 2021, when the Győr-based company started to close the loop on the aluminum used in its production. As part of the closed loop, aluminum scrap from the production process is returned to the supplier, who produces new aluminum coils of original quality and returns them to Audi Hungaria as raw material, this way the cycle continues and ensures sustainable production. As the production of aluminum from primary raw material is a highly energy-intensive process, the supplier of the raw material can achieve energy savings of approximately 95% by using the returned high quality aluminum scrap.

Audi Hungaria has steadily increased the amount of recycled aluminum under the Aluminum Closed Loop program. The company now recycles all the affected aluminum sheet waste in a closed loop, which exceeded 6,000 tons last year, resulting in a saving of nearly 45,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year. This amount of carbon dioxide is the equivalent of more than 300 million kilometers of driving, which is about the same distance as travelling 400 times back and forth between the Moon and the Earth.

At Audi Hungaria, in addition to recycling aluminum waste, other residual materials are also recycled to a high standard, so that in total more than 99 percent of the waste generated by the company is being recycled.
